The Ukrainian army is deploying its most advanced machinery in the Kursk region. Modern Western-supplied tanks, such as the Leopard 2A6, are participating in the fighting on Russian territory. A recording from the front, featuring this tank, has been shared online by platforms like the OSINT Technical profile on X.

In recent weeks, Ukrainian armed forces have boldly engaged in the Kursk region on Russian soil. British Challengers 2, used by one of the most elite units within the Ukrainian military, the 82nd Air Assault Brigade, among many others, are also providing support.

The latest tanks in NATO’s arsenal, the Leopard 2A6, which Ukraine received from Germany and Portugal (a total of 18 units were sent), are creating significant disruption among Russian forces. However, reports from the front indicate that up until now, 12 of these tanks have either been destroyed, damaged, or abandoned. No precise data is available to clarify how many Leopard 2A6 tanks the Ukrainian forces currently possess.

It is worth noting that the Leopard 2A6 tank, designed by the German company Krauss-Maffei Wegmann, is renowned for its impressive offensive and defensive capabilities, making it one of the most coveted machines in combat.

The best tanks from Europe

The Leopard 2A6 boasts numerous technical innovations that allow it to excel on contemporary battlefields. One key element is its advanced fire control system, which enables precise targeting and elimination of targets, even in challenging terrain and weather conditions. This system uses thermal cameras and laser rangefinders, significantly enhancing combat effectiveness.

The Leopard 2A6's primary armament is the 120 mm L/55 smoothbore cannon by Rheinmetall. This weapon facilitates the use of modern ammunition, including sub-calibre and high-explosive anti-tank shells, which offer a significant advantage in encounters with enemy heavy armoured vehicles. In addition to the main cannon, the tank is armed with two 7.62 mm machine guns, supporting anti-infantry operations and close-range protection.

The Leopard 2A6 stands out for its advanced protection systems. One key element is its multi-layer composite armour, composed of steel plates, ceramics, and composite materials. This makes the tank resilient to various types of anti-armour ammunition, including high-explosive anti-tank and kinetic energy projectiles. The Leopard 2A6 is also equipped with active protection systems that can detect and neutralise incoming projectiles, further enhancing crew safety.

Significantly, the Leopard 2A6 was designed with crew comfort and efficiency in mind. The interior ergonomics have been optimised to ensure comfortable working conditions even during prolonged combat operations. The tank is equipped with air conditioning, modern navigation systems, and advanced communication solutions, enabling effective management and coordination of actions. Onboard diagnostic systems also allow for quick detection and resolution of potential issues, minimising downtime.
