- Today is the second anniversary of the day Russian tanks crossed the Ukrainian border. This initiated the largest war in Europe since World War II. I would like to commence by paying tribute to the courageous Ukrainians who have given their lives or suffered injuries whilst defending their homeland - began Stoltenberg.

- The current situation in the war zone remains gravely concerning. Putin's objective to subdue Ukraine has not changed. There is no sign to suggest that he is ready for peace - added the NATO chief.

A plea from NATO

Nonetheless, Stoltenberg urged to maintain hope and morale.

Ukraine has consistently demonstrated tremendous skill and fierce resolve. Ukraine did not succumb within a matter of a few weeks, as many had feared. You have reclaimed half of the territory initially seized by Russia. You pushed Russia back from a significant area of the Black Sea. And you inflicted a heavy blow to the Russian forces - highlighted the Norwegian.

- Importantly, Ukraine has retained its freedom and independence. This was realised thanks to your bravery and determination. It was made possible through substantial military and economic support from NATO allies. In the recent days and weeks, NATO members have announced new aid packages amounting to billions of dollars. These include crucial provisions like artillery ammunition, air defence, and combat vessels, along with equipment and spare parts for F-16 fighters, drones, and mine-clearing equipment. Additional aid is forthcoming - Stoltenberg announced.

He pointed out that Vladimir Putin precipitated the war under the pretext of shutting Ukraine's path towards NATO but his actions have led exactly in the opposite direction.

- Ukraine is now more aligned with NATO than at any other time. We are assisting in enhancing the compatibility of your armed services with those of the allies. Together, we will establish a new Joint Analysis, Training, and Education Centre in Poland. We are also strengthening our political ties through conducting consultations and decision-making on the NATO-Ukraine Council. Ukraine will join NATO. It is not a question of whether, but when. In preparation for this event, NATO will continue to support Ukraine - for both their and our mutual security – concluded the Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance.
