Nearly on the brink of the presidential elections in the USA, Kamala Harris is ahead in the state of Iowa, which was previously seen as a Republican fortress.
According to Ann Selzer’s and "Des Moines Register" poll on Saturday, Harris leads in the agricultural state over Trump with a margin of 47 to 44 per cent. This is a notable shift compared to the September poll, where Trump led with 47 per cent to 43 per cent.
Harris can count on women's votes
As the "Des Moines Register" comments, a Harris victory in Iowa would be a "shocking event" after Iowa turned decisively to the right in the last elections.
The primary factor supporting the Democratic candidate is the backing of politically independent women who fear a Trump return to power. Harris leads among these women by 28 percentage points.
Immediate reaction from Trump's team
Trump's team responded instantly to the surprising poll. Republican candidate associates released the results of the Emerson College poll. "It reflects the state of the actual Iowa electorate and does so with far more transparency in their methodology," the campaign’s website stated.
The Emerson College poll conducted in Iowa indicated a similarly decisive victory for Trump, 53-43 per cent. The same survey on the eve of the 2020 election showed only a two-point lead for Trump over Biden.
In 2016 and 2020, Trump won in the agricultural state of Iowa by a margin of 10 and 8 percentage points, respectively.
