It often happens that after purchasing an avocado, it proves too hard to eat straight away. Why is this the case? The reason is simple—avocados arrive in shops before they're fully ripe, due to the long transportation process. So, what can you do to speed up an avocado's ripening? Try this simple trick.

How does an avocado ripen?

Fortunately, there are straightforward and natural ways to accelerate avocado ripening. One of the simplest techniques is to place the fruit in a paper bag. Avocados release ethylene, a ripening gas that accelerates the process when the fruit is enclosed in a bag.

To expedite ripening further, you can add a few fruits, such as apples or bananas, to the bag. These fruits also emit ethylene, significantly boosting the ripening process when combined with avocados. This method is natural and uncomplicated, requiring little effort and yielding satisfactory results in a short time.

How to soften an avocado quickly?

Sometimes, however, we need a soft avocado "right now" and can't wait a few days. In such cases, there are proven quick methods. One of the most popular techniques involves using the oven. This process involves wrapping the fruit in aluminium foil and placing it in an oven preheated to 90°C for a few minutes. This makes the avocado softer and ready to eat immediately.

Another trick uses the microwave. Cut the avocado in half, remove the pit, and then place it in the microwave on low power for about 30 seconds. In this case, do not wrap the avocado in aluminium foil. It's also wise to poke it with a fork before microwaving.

How to store avocados?

Soft avocados are best wrapped in cling film and stored in the refrigerator to keep them fresh. Sprinkling a cut avocado with lemon juice is also an excellent way to preserve its colour.

Soft avocados have many culinary uses. They can be used as a base for guacamole, enhancing its flavour and texture. They're also great additions to salads, sandwiches, or as ingredients in healthy smoothies. Remember, their soft texture is ideal for spreading, and their rich taste enhances any dish.
