Matilde Lorenzi, an Italian alpine skier just shy of 20 years old, passed away in a hospital in Bolzano due to injuries sustained during training in Val Senales, South Tyrol. "We lost her tragically," wrote representatives of the International Ski and Snowboard Federation.

An unimaginable tragedy occurred during training. The young athlete had an accident from which she did not recover.
Born on 15 November 2004, Lorenzi was considered one of the greatest hopes of Italian alpine skiing.
During training on the Grawand G1 slope in Val Senales, she fell and suffered severe injuries. The young athlete lost her balance during a slalom and, as a result of the fall, sustained serious head injuries.
She was immediately airlifted to a hospital in Bolzano, but despite the doctors' best efforts, she could not be saved.
We express our deep sorrow at the passing of Matilde Lorenzi. We lost her tragically in an accident during a training session on the Grawand G1 slope in Val Senales, according to a statement by the FIS, quoted by the Polish Press Agency.

Lorenzi was also a soldier, as mentioned in a statement by the Italian Ministry of Defence.

In the previous season, she competed in the World Junior Championships, where she finished sixth in the downhill and eighth in the super-G. She also participated in the European Cup events, preparing for her debut in the World Cup.
Her tragic death shocked the sports community in Italy and around the globe. Teammates remember her as a talented and passionate athlete with a promising career ahead of her.
