The surprising science of coffee's effect on digestion

For many, a morning is incomplete without a cup of black coffee. Besides boosting energy, it can also accelerate a trip to the bathroom. However, not everyone knows the reason behind this common issue.

Some people can begin their day smoothly after enjoying a cup of coffee, while others urgently need to locate the nearest loo after their favourite brew. For some, it triggers the intestines, while others experience pressure on the bladder. Many of us face this problem without understanding why it occurs.

Why do you need to go to the bathroom after coffee?

Nearly one in three people experience the urge to use the bathroom just minutes after drinking coffee. This phenomenon has several explanations, including coffee's effect on gastrin levels and digestive processes. Coffee stimulates the digestive tract. It encourages the secretion of gastrin and hydrochloric acid, leading to increased bowel activity and facilitating movement. Consequently, coffee has a laxative effect.

Additionally, drinking a warm liquid, such as coffee, may encourage bowel movements by increasing the activity of rectal muscles. This effect of promoting defecation further contributes to the necessity of visiting the bathroom after consuming coffee.

Moreover, issues may arise even with decaffeinated coffee. The caffeine and the fact that the drink is consumed hot contribute to the laxative effect.

Help for constipation

At first glance, coffee's laxative properties might seem helpful in treating constipation. In the short term, they might offer relief, but they should not be relied upon in the long run. Caffeine's dehydrating effect can sometimes worsen bowel movement issues for specific individuals. Regular coffee consumption might paradoxically cause dehydration, thereby exacerbating constipation problems.

If you suffer from chronic constipation, coffee is not a good solution. Instead, focus on a proper diet rich in fibre, regular physical activity, and adequate water intake.
