Robert Eggers is on quite a streak. His feature debut, "The Witch: A New-England Folktale," was made for $4 million and grossed over $40 million worldwide. It featured a young Anya Taylor-Joy, whose fee today might rival the entire production budget from back then. The success of the film was monumental. Another achievement followed swiftly. Eggers made "The Lighthouse" with Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe for $4 million, earning "only" $18 million globally. His next box office triumph was "The Northman," which garnered nearly $70 million. Hence, there is no shortage of anticipation for this director's next film.
Robert Eggers and his "Nosferatu"
Reports quickly emerged that Eggers was tackling a classic - presenting a new version of "Nosferatu." There are countless vampire stories, but it was known that this director would undoubtedly surprise. He cast Lily-Rose Depp as the protagonist and chose Bill Skarsgård to portray the ancient vampire, Count Orlok. The cast includes Willem Dafoe, Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Emma Corrin.
Nosferatu is "a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake," states the producer's description.
The first trailer for Eggers' film is now out. In just 15 hours, it has been viewed over 3 million times on YouTube, with the view count still rising.
"This is exactly how a vampire horror should look—suspense and many scares. Beautiful horror and the best monster" wrote one internet user under the video.
It appears Eggers will have us covering our eyes in cinemas.
It has been rumoured since 2015 that Eggers was working on "Nosferatu." The film was supposed to be made earlier - it was meant to be his second film. However, something held him back. "It feels ugly and blasphemous and egomaniacal and disgusting for a filmmaker in my place to do Nosferatu next. I was really planning on waiting a while, but that’s how fate shook out," he commented. The film, however, did not come together quickly, and Eggers even threatened in the media that he might not finish it at all. A sign of trouble was that Anya Taylor-Joy, whom Eggers had initially intended for the main character, was unavailable.
Finally, the film will be released in cinemas worldwide... on Christmas this year. British viewers will see the new "Nosferatu" a month later, on 24 January 2025.
