Congressman Andy Ogles, representing Tennessee, put forward a proposal on Thursday to amend the US Constitution to permit President Donald Trump and future presidents to serve a third term. Ogles argues that "he has proven himself to be the only figure in modern history capable of reversing our nation’s decay and restoring America to greatness."

Ogles emphasises the necessity of providing Trump with all the resources required to address the aftermath of the Biden administration. "He is dedicated to restoring the republic and saving our country, and we, as legislators and as states, must do everything in our power to support him," Ogles stated. The proposed constitutional amendment seeks to change the limitations imposed by the 22nd Amendment, which currently restricts presidents to two terms.

Controversies surrounding the proposal

Ogles's resolution emerged three days after Trump's inauguration for his second, and thus, according to current law, his final term. Previously, Democratic Congressman Dan Goldman introduced a resolution confirming that the 22nd Amendment limits the presidency to two terms. The amendment was introduced in 1947 and ratified in 1951 to prevent a situation similar to that of Franklin Roosevelt, who was elected for four terms. Ogles aims to alter the provision to allow a president to be elected three times.

Philip Klinkner from Hamilton College suggests that Trump could become vice president and then assume the presidency if the sitting president resigns. Another scenario could involve a member of Trump's family running as a candidate, acting as a figurehead while Trump makes key decisions.
