Sunscreen's surprising year-round necessity revealed
Sunscreen is often associated with sunny holidays. During these times, it is an essential item in every cosmetic bag. It's well-known that solar radiation accelerates aging and can even be carcinogenic to the skin. But is it necessary to use it during autumn and winter?
Sunscreen is essential all year round
Autumn is a time when we typically put aside sunscreen. We assume that since the sun isn't shining as brightly or its rays feel gentler, there's no need to use it. However, this is a mistaken belief. Although the sun isn't as strong as in the summer, ultraviolet radiation still reaches us. This includes cloudy days and even indoors, where we are exposed to various stimuli like screens. Therefore, a broad-spectrum SPF sunscreen protects the skin from harmful UVA and UVB radiation.
It's not just a matter of health but also aesthetics, as neglecting sunscreen can lead to a deterioration in skin structure. It is, therefore, important in anti-wrinkle and anti-aging treatments. Sunlight accelerates the breakdown of proteins such as elastin and collagen, resulting in the appearance of the first wrinkles. Furthermore, sun exposure can cause skin cancer, discoloration, allergies, and dry skin. The facial skin is particularly demanding as it is more delicate and thinner than the rest of the body. For this reason, an SPF 50 or SPF 30 sunscreen is a "must-have."
How to use sunscreen?
Dermatologists recommend using sunscreen all year round as part of your daily skincare routine, especially when planning to go outdoors. It also works well as a base for makeup. When applying sunscreen to your face, ensure it is evenly distributed. Instead of rubbing, it's better to pat it in, as this won't irritate the skin and will be more effective. Apply half a teaspoon of the product to the face for guaranteed protection. It's advisable to reapply during the day to maintain its effect. If you’re wearing makeup, an SPF mist is a good option.
In autumn and winter, it's worthwhile choosing a cream with moisturizing and regenerating properties that will form a protective barrier against dry skin. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, or ectoine will assist with this.
