The quest for online fame can have tragic consequences. A woman from China, Pan Xiaoting, learned this the hard way as she died in front of viewers. Her death was a result of overeating.

The internet has witnessed a surge in the popularity of broadcasts known as Mukbang. These involve consuming large quantities of unhealthy food in front of a camera. The 24-year-old Pan Xiaoting streamed for over 10 hours. During this time, she consumed over 10 kilograms of food. She had indulged in similar activities, which alarmingly only encouraged viewers to emulate her behaviour. Tragically, on 14th July, her body could not endure it any longer.

Pan Xiaoting died on 14th July this year during a broadcast. According to the Daily Mail, the cause of death was overeating, and autopsy results revealed a distended stomach and a ruptured stomach, which was the immediate cause of her demise. The streamer ate over 10 kilograms of food, which her body could not digest. Notably, she had previously been hospitalised due to stomach bleeding caused by overeating but was discharged after a few days and returned to streaming.

Overeating in front of the camera has become such a significant issue in China that in 2020, the country imposed a ban on publishing this type of content. Breaching this ban can result in a fine of up to 10,000 yuan, equivalent to over 1,100 pounds.
