Storing milk on the fridge door: Why it's a bad idea

Often, out of habit or routine, we place groceries in the refrigerator where we always do. Sometimes, though, these aren't the optimal spots. A prime example is storing milk on the refrigerator door. There are numerous reasons to avoid this.

Storing food like milk, eggs or meat under the correct conditions is crucial. If not, these products won't maintain their quality and freshness, and we might risk food poisoning. Moreover, proper storage prevents food from spoiling quickly, and no one wants to waste groceries. That’s why it's important to allocate the right place for each product in the refrigerator.

Pay attention to temperature

One of the main errors is storing groceries at incorrect temperatures. Many items need to be kept in the refrigerator or freezer, while others are best preserved at room temperature. Too low or too high a temperature can accelerate food spoilage and increase the risk of bacterial contamination. It's essential to understand the storage requirements for each product and to comply with them.

Seal packages tightly

Another problem is improperly sealing packages. The impact of air on food quality is considerable, so packages should be sealed tightly. Unsealed packages can lead to faster spoilage and a greater risk of food poisoning. Keeping an eye on expiration dates is also crucial, as the quality of products can start to decline even before these dates.

Direct to the right shelf

Storing food at the bottom of the refrigerator or freezer can be a mistake because of the colder temperatures in these areas. It's preferable to keep products on shelves closer to the top. Additionally, it's vital to avoid storing items with different smells together, as some, like fruits, emit ethylene gases that can affect other products, such as meat or dairy.

Why is storing milk on the refrigerator door a mistake?

Cartons or milk bottles should not be kept on the refrigerator door due to frequent temperature fluctuations. Each time you open and close the refrigerator door, the milk stored there is exposed to changing thermal conditions, which accelerates spoiling. Therefore, milk should be stored inside the refrigerator, where the temperature remains stable.
