Stellantis halts production amid declining demand in Italy
The company announces another series of stoppages and breaks in Italian factories. Officially, this is a response to declining demand.
Last week, Stellantis confirmed to Italian unions that it does not plan to close plants or conduct mass redundancies in the country. However, this does not mean that everything will proceed smoothly. In the current financial situation, cuts are indeed necessary.
Stellantis aims to save money by temporarily halting some production lines familiar to Italian workers. The company has just announced further measures. The first break at the Cassino plant will last one day, 29 November. The second, in Termoli, will last from 16 to 22 December.
Company representatives say they are determined to ensure the continuity of operations in Italy, but they are on a path that requires difficult choices. Stellantis has been facing declining demand for some time and increasing competition from Chinese manufacturers. It is also struggling with huge inventories, leading to reduced financial forecasts.
