The main topics of conversation will be: trade, investment, and security issues.

"The prime minister looks forward to meeting President [Donald] Trump shortly to discuss how we can deepen the special relationship across trade, investment and security," said the British government's spokesperson. Starmer also intends to urge European leaders to engage more with NATO, including increasing defence spending.

The prime minister explained that "The U.K. is ready to play a leading role in accelerating work on security guarantees for Ukraine. But it also means being ready and willing to contribute to security guarantees to Ukraine by putting our own troops on the ground if necessary."

Security guarantees

Starmer emphasised that "U.S. support will remain critical and a U.S. security guarantee is essential for a lasting peace, because only the U.S. can deter Putin from attacking again. So I will be meeting President Trump in the coming days and working with him and all our G7 partners to help secure the strong deal we need."

On Monday, Starmer will participate in an informal summit in Paris, where other European leaders, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will also meet. "Their discussions may then continue in other formats, with the aim of bringing together all partners interested in peace and security in Europe," stated a communiqué issued by the Élysée Palace.
