It's important to maintain the washing machine's hygiene because mould and fungi can quickly develop in such an appliance, and a new device is quite a costly investment. However, you don't need expensive, specialised products, just a few clever tricks that will save the washing machine from issues, including unpleasant smells.

How to protect the washing machine from moisture?

Many people leave the washing machine door slightly open after finishing the laundry. This is a sensible move that certainly helps to eliminate moisture. However, it is not sufficient. To fully protect the washing machine from the problem, you should also open the detergent drawer.

Why? The drawer, where the washing powder and fabric softener are placed, also comes into contact with water. After some time, mould may develop on it.

The washing machine door and drawer should always be left open. This could increase the risk of damage. Fifteen minutes after the laundry cycle is sufficient. We should also occasionally remove the drawer and thoroughly clean it of any detergent residues. Then, we can be sure that nothing undesirable will settle in it.

How to get rid of mould from the washing machine drawer?

If we notice mould already appearing in the drawer, we should take immediate action. It's worth using products that we typically have in our kitchen cupboard. We need two clean sponges, vinegar, and water.

Mix vinegar with water in a 1:2 ratio. Soak the sponges in the prepared solution and place them in the drawer. Leave them there for 15–30 minutes, depending on the level of dirt. After this time, wipe the compartments with the sponges and finally dry them with paper towels. Vinegar has bleaching and disinfecting properties and will quickly remove any residue.
