The Irish airline Ryanair is warning passengers travelling to Italy to prepare for the return of cumbersome airport procedures, which have been reinstated ahead of the G-7 summit. Unfortunately, there will be delays. The Italian authorities' reason for this decision is known. How long will the inconvenience last?

Ryanair informed passengers of disruptions at Italian airports. According to the statement, all travellers to Italy from the Schengen area and beyond "must undergo immigration control upon arrival to have their travel documents checked." Domestic flight passengers within Italy will not undergo control.

Checks have been introduced at airports and Italy's land and sea borders. This is related to the G-7 summit, which will take place in Borgo Egnazia in Apulia from 13-15 June. Border checks are expected to be lifted on 18 June at 13:00 GMT.

Italy has decided to reinstate temporary border controls for security reasons and due to an increased risk of terrorist attacks. Italian authorities also fear public order and safety disturbances, which could occur due to the summit.

Italy extends border controls with Slovenia

Italy decided to implement border controls at the land border with Slovenia this January. Italian authorities explain the threat of violence in the EU due to the attack on Israel, as well as the risk of potential terrorist attacks and infiltration of illegal migration flows from the Balkan route.

Although the Italian authorities originally planned to lift controls at this particular border on 19 June, it has been confirmed that they will be maintained until 18 December 2024.

The temporary return to border controls happens quite frequently in the Schengen Area. Last year alone, this step was taken 20 times.

Migration problems explained most cases, although it was also due to the increased risk of terrorist attacks during major political or sporting events.
