"Russian assault units, capitalizing on overcast conditions and the inability to conduct extensive aerial reconnaissance, infiltrated the city from the northeast and quarry side. They circumvented Ukrainian military formations and holed up in buildings. This implies that they are mere yards away from the main logistical vein of the Ukrainian defenders," Caplijenko reported.

Sources from the Ukrainian army claim that the situation "is not yet hopeless". "Provided infantry reserves with urban warfare experience are available, the Russian breakthrough can still be eliminated, as was, in fact, the case two weeks ago in the Tsarskaya Okhota and Sobornaya Street area (in the south of Avdiivka). In essence, the battle for Avdiivka is entering a decisive phase," he concluded.

The Russian offensive against Avdiivka has been sustained over the past four months.
