Russian forces exploit Starlink to boost battlefield tactics

The American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) noted in its latest report that Russians illegally obtain Starlink terminals to technologically match Ukraine. It is uncertain how they bypass sanctions to acquire equipment officially unavailable to them.

"By illegally obtaining Starlink terminals, Russians aim to enhance their combat coordination and the effectiveness of their strike reconnaissance," analysts said.

Starlink terminals in Russian hands

Starlink is a project by the American company SpaceX, owned by Elon Musk. Its purpose is to provide satellite internet access anywhere on Earth. It relies on satellites orbiting the Earth and terminals that enable signal reception. This technology can offer internet access even in areas lacking traditional network infrastructure. Satellite internet from SpaceX's Starlink was launched over Ukraine at the beginning of 2022.

Ukrainian military personnel from the Donetsk region told "The Washington Post" that Starlink terminals are increasingly being seen at Russian positions. The illegally obtained technology assists Russians in resolving issues related to combat coordination and communication.

According to Ukrainians, the arrival of these terminals has reduced intercepted Russian radio transmissions. Ukrainian soldiers also believe that Starlink is contributing to recent Russian territorial gains.

"Access to Starlink terminals has given Ukraine a technological edge, enabling more effective coordination of combat operations and the development of new reconnaissance solutions. Russian forces are likely trying to diminish this advantage by increasing their own use of terminals," ISW summarised.

The first reports of Starlink terminals in Russian possession emerged several months ago. In September, a Russian Shahed-136 drone, equipped with this satellite communication from SpaceX, was shot down over Ukraine. This suggested that Starlink terminals are becoming increasingly available to Putin's army.
