Approximately 15 million Russians suffer from severe depression. This is over 10 per cent of the Russian population. The most common causes of poor mental health in society are prolonged illness or the death of a loved one, domestic violence, and high debts, but the political situation also affects mental well-being.
Such conclusions were reached by the Agency for Strategic Initiatives (ASI) during a long-term study that included about 40,000 people. As stated by Svetlana Chupsheva, the general director of ASI, many people struggle with depression and loneliness. This is a global challenge today, affecting not only Russia.
