Shock waves as Croatian deputy PM resigns over gun video
Scandal in the Croatian government. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, Josip Dabro, has resigned after a video surfaced of him firing a gun from a moving car. Dabro apologised for his actions, which he called "a result of a momentary lapse in judgement."
Josip Dabro, Deputy Prime Minister of Croatia, stepped down after the release of a video showing him firing a pistol from a moving car. Dabro, who also served as the Minister of Agriculture, confirmed the authenticity of the video that circulated in the Croatian media and apologised, explaining it was "a result of a momentary lapse in judgement," according to Politico.
Dabro stated that the video was recorded several years ago, before he held any government position, and its release is a political attack by a former friend turned rival. He emphasised that the gun was loaded with blanks and legally registered, and that his actions did not endanger anyone.
A few hours later, Dabro announced his resignation from his position "for moral reasons." He published a statement on Facebook regarding the matter.
"Although I am ready to continue the fight to improve the sector I led, I am aware that the circumstances I find myself in are an additional burden for the government and my party," he wrote.
"As a responsible person and public official, I believe that my personal situation should not distract from the key priorities of the government and the sector, nor slow down further necessary reforms," reads the statement.
He added that while serving as a minister, he was under significant pressure and faced threats, and he is currently under police protection.
The office of Prime Minister Andrej Plenković confirmed that Dabro was asked to resign on Friday evening and will be relieved of his duties on Saturday.
