Roda JC's promotion hopes hang by a thread after a dramatic twist

The Dutch Roda JC Kerkrade is one step away from returning to the Eredivisie. It seemed they would secure this before the final round of competition in the second tier. After a 2:0 victory over SC Cambuur, fans stormed the field to celebrate what appeared to be a certain promotion. However, in another match, a last-minute goal shattered all hopes.

In the second tier of the Dutch Eredivisie, the battle for promotion is intense. Currently, it’s confirmed that Willem II will play there next season. Who will join them remains a mystery.

It appeared that the situation would be resolved one round before the end. Roda JC Kerkrade defeated SC Cambuur 2:0, leading to fans flooding onto the pitch prematurely celebrating their promotion.

Meanwhile, FC Groningen, also in contention for promotion, scored a goal in added time against Telstar, keeping their hopes of surpassing Roda alive. Thus, going into the final round, both teams still have a shot at finishing second place.

Excitingly, everything hinges on the last round, featuring a direct showdown between the two teams. The stakes are clear: FC Groningen must beat Roda to ascend to the Dutch Eredivisie next season. Any other outcome will see their rivals prevail.

This development suddenly stopped Roda's fans' jubilant celebrations. Yet, should the upcoming match swing in their favour, the Dutch club’s supporters might get the chance to celebrate without interruption.
