How often can you eat porridge for breakfast each week? Although it warms you up nicely and provides the body with many valuable nutrients, it can simply become boring. That's why sometimes it's worth swapping it for an equally nutritious breakfast that will sustain you for the whole morning. I recommend an omelette – it does contain less fibre than porridge, but it ensures a good supply of protein.

In my autumn breakfast menu, omelettes definitely reign supreme. I love them because they go well with almost any topping. If I fancy fresh vegetables, I add rocket and cherry tomatoes. Occasionally, I'll add blue cheese, pear, and walnuts. Other times, I enjoy it with homemade cherry jam. Recently, I tried a recipe for an omelette with sausage, spinach, and sun-dried tomatoes.
Omelette vs. Porridge
I'm convinced there are fans of both dishes. I like to alternate between the two because I do not like monotony. However, it's good to know that both the omelette and the porridge have their strengths and weaknesses.
An omelette contains a high amount of protein, which is necessary for building muscles. It is easy to prepare, can be served with various toppings, and keeps hunger at bay for a long time. Unfortunately, it also contains a high amount of fat and a low amount of fibre – unless you add fibre-rich ingredients.
On the other hand, porridge is rich in fibre, which improves intestinal function and provides a feeling of fullness. With different add-ins such as fruits or nuts, you can enrich it with valuable vitamins and minerals. However, it's hard to make porridge with more protein – unless you add a protein mix.
How to make a fluffy omelette?
I've tried various omelette recipes. I separated the egg whites and yolks, but it turned out that the secret to a successful breakfast isn't there. It's about beating the eggs into a fluffy and thick mixture. If they are too aerated, the omelette will rise only momentarily and then quickly drop. A well-heated frying pan with a stable temperature, preferably with a thick bottom, is also important.
Omelette recipe with sausage, spinach, and sun-dried tomatoes
Ingredients:
- 60g sausage,
- 30g onion,
- a handful of spinach,
- 3 eggs,
- 30ml 18% cream,
- salt,
- pepper,
- 1 tbsp olive oil,
- 4 sun-dried tomatoes in oil.
How to make a hearty omelette for a chilly morning, step by step?
- Heat the olive oil in a pan, add finely chopped onion and diced sausage.
- In a bowl, beat the eggs with a mixer. Add cream, a pinch of salt, and pepper at the end of beating.
- Add spinach to the pan's ingredients. Once it softens, pour in the egg mixture. Top with the sliced sun-dried tomatoes.
- Cover with a lid and fry until the omelette is golden. Enjoy with fresh add-ons like cherry tomatoes and rocket. You can sprinkle it with chives or parsley.
