Have you ever pulled white socks from the washing machine only to find they look like they haven't been washed? Try a homemade solution if you wish for them to return to their original snow-white colour. The results will surpass your expectations.

White socks tend to become dirty quite easily. Moreover, over time, they start to pill, making them appear heavily worn even after a thorough wash. Unfortunately, even specialized laundry detergents with whitening properties often fail to remove tough stains on socks.

If you notice that your socks are starting to look worn and are considering buying new ones, try preparing a homemade rinse aid before you discard the old ones. It's likely to tackle even the most stubborn stains.

How to clean white socks without expensive whiteners

White fabrics are incredibly prone to various types of stains. Furthermore, they tend to turn yellow or grey over time. In such cases, many of us buy expensive detergents or bleach, hoping to restore the fabrics to their original shade.

Consider equally effective home remedies instead of using bleach, which often leads to allergies and headaches. Baking soda and vinegar are commonly found in the kitchen and can also be excellent for cleaning. They are ideal for polishing, descaling, disinfecting, and whitening.

White socks turned grey after washing? Try this household tip

To effectively clean white socks, prepare a rinse that will not only whiten the fabric but also disinfect it. This is particularly crucial if someone in your household suffers from sweaty feet. Pour at least 4 pints of warm water into a basin and add two tablespoons of baking soda. If the stains are tough, feel free to increase the amount. Soak the socks in this solution for at least half an hour. Afterwards, wash them in the washing machine. Once dried, your socks will be clean and snow-white.

If you don't have baking soda, vinegar works just as well. Pour a cup of vinegar into 4 pints of warm water and soak the socks in this mixture. After 30 minutes, throw them into the washing machine. The vinegar smell will disappear after washing.

Whiten socks with the eggshell trick

Baking soda and vinegar are eco-friendly cleaning solutions. However, if you don't have them at hand, eggshells can be used to whiten socks. While it might seem odd, this method is effective because eggshells have whitening properties.

How to use eggshells for whitening? Place clean eggshells into a mesh bag, like those typically used for washing delicate items. Then, put the bag in the washing machine and run it as usual. After drying, the socks will be noticeably whiter.
