Potato water: The secret ingredient in natural beauty care

People who embrace the "zero waste" concept likely already know that potato water is excellent as a fertiliser for flowers. You might also be aware that it can remove limescale from a kettle or residue in a sink. However, these are not the only potential uses for the broth from these common vegetables. It turns out that the water from cooking potatoes can be remarkably effective in home skincare and hair care.

Potato broth contains many valuable elements that can be beneficial not only for reusing in the kitchen. Once cooled, you can create two valuable cosmetics from it. Our grandmothers were well aware of this. It's worth discovering how they work before spending more money at the shops.

Potato water rich in valuable elements

Contrary to appearances, potatoes are not merely a hearty addition to dinner. Often underrated, they contain significant amounts of potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, and iron, not to mention vitamins. These nutrients partially transfer into the water during the boiling of potatoes. It's worthwhile to use them in cosmetics.

Facial toner from potato water

Once the water has cooled, simply pour it into a bottle, and you can use it to cleanse your facial skin. Apply a small amount to a cotton pad, and you're ready to go. Potato toner has soothing and anti-inflammatory properties, helps brighten discolourations, and moisturises the skin. You can use it daily.

Hair rinse

You might be surprised at how beneficial potato water can be for brunettes experiencing their first grey hairs. Using the rinse twice a week darkens hair colour, making silver strands less noticeable. The nutrients in potatoes strengthen and moisturise the hair strands.

How to use potato rinse?

Use the cooled potato water to rinse your hair right after washing it with shampoo. If you struggle with detangling curls, you can use the rinse after applying conditioner.

The simplest approach is to carry out the treatment over a bathtub, sink, or shower. Lean your head forward and slowly pour the mixture over your hair. Pat with a towel and leave it for 30 minutes. After that time, you don't need to rinse your hair with clean water. You can dry it immediately with a hairdryer.

What else can you use potato water for?

Returning to culinary applications, you can use potato water for cooking soup. This way, you won't need to thicken it further. It also serves as a warming drink that helps to fend off colds. Additionally, it assists in combating kidney stones.
