What is halloumi?
Halloumi is an excellent alternative to regular cheese that will transform your menu. In Greece, it is most often served as a snack, grilled on a barbecue or in a pan. It has a slightly salty, delicate taste and a characteristic, fibrous texture, gently squeaking under the teeth. It is an excellent alternative to meat in burgers or kebabs. It has a firm texture and does not melt during baking, retaining its shape.
Pita with honey halloumi
Halloumi can be combined with various additions. As befits a cheese, it is worth adding sweet notes to it. Combining the cheese's taste with honey, broken by the fresh tzatziki sauce, will make you love this snack from the first bite. If you are a fan of spiciness, you can add some crushed chilli flakes to the honey halloumi.
Ingredients:
- 2 pieces of halloumi
- Honey
- 4 wheat pitas
Tzatziki sauce:
- 9 oz of Greek yoghurt
- 1 cucumber
- 1 clove of garlic
- Salt to taste
- 1 teaspoon of olive oil
- Chopped dill
Method of preparation:
Step 1: Start with the tzatziki sauce. Grate the cucumber. Transfer the Greek yoghurt to a bowl, add the garlic pressed through a garlic press, chopped dill, olive oil, and the grated cucumber squeezed of water. Season with salt to taste and mix. Put in the fridge.
Step 2: Cut the halloumi into medium-thick slices and grill them in a pan, on an electric grill or a classic barbecue. Do this on both sides until the cheese is appetisingly browned and becomes crispy.
