Orban calls for EU to rethink sanctions as ceasefire looms
Viktor Orban hopes that following a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia, the European Union will revise its economic policy. "It’s time to throw sanctions out the window," said the Prime Minister of Hungary.
During a conversation with Kossuth Radio, Viktor Orban expressed anticipation for the forthcoming inauguration of Donald Trump in the USA. "From Tuesday, a different sun will rise over the Western world," he remarked.
He emphasised his positive outlook for 2025 and his hopes for the cessation of military actions in Ukraine. He further mentioned that he anticipates this will mean the resumption of economic relations with Russia.
"Hungary has performed above its size and weight, and the most important thing now is for Brussels to adapt to the new situation. It’s time to throw sanctions out the window and to create a sanctions-free relationship with the Russians," he stated.

He also criticised Ukraine and stated that the policy towards Kyiv should be managed differently.
"We must also start to deal with Ukraine through a non-war lens. We are talking about a country that is unable to sustain itself and whose economy is not linked to the EU system," he said.
