A video has recently appeared online showcasing Ukrainian soldiers making use of the Oncilla armored personnel carrier. This footage is particularly noteworthy since it features equipment being delivered to the front lines from Poland.

The Oncilla vehicles have earned high praise from Ukrainian forces, although they are not commonly seen in front-line reports, as only a limited number have arrived there. At the start of March 2024, the Mista company revealed it had produced only the hundredth such vehicle for Ukraine. The exact number of these vehicles that have been dispatched to the eastern front remains unspecified.

Equipped with a remotely controlled combat module that houses a shooting position on the roof, the Oncilla sports a .50 caliber NSW machine gun. Operated by a single soldier under field conditions, the vehicle also accommodates a commander and a driver, while offering additional space for up to six more individuals inside.

An official from the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine mentioned in a previous interview that the Oncilla carriers "have performed admirably on the battlefield and have been instrumental in saving the lives of Ukrainian soldiers".

What level of protection does the Oncilla vehicle offer?

The Oncilla is a sizable vehicle, almost 5.5 metres in length and about 2.5 metres in width. Its armour meets the level 2 requirements of the STANAG 4569 standard, offering protection to its occupants against 7.62×39 mm bullets and blasts from explosive devices (up to roughly 6 kg) placed under any of its wheels.

Key features of this Polish-made vehicle include a thermal imaging camera for operations in challenging light conditions, communication and satellite navigation systems, and an automatic fire suppression system.

In the field, the vehicle's considerable engine power (roughly 190 to 209 HP, depending on the model), combined with a 4x4 drive and relatively high ground clearance, are crucial for the troops. Additionally, the Oncilla has a self-protection winch capable of towing up to about 6,800 kg.
