Nissan initiates major U.S. cuts amid £2bn savings drive
The Japanese aim to save up to £2 billion. Unfortunately, achieving this goal requires sacrifices.
Nissan is another brand facing a crisis caused by global changes in the automotive market. The Japanese company has just announced significant cuts in the USA. These decisions will affect the factories in Smyrna, Tennessee, Canton, Mississippi, and Decherd.
The manufacturer announced that starting in April, it will eliminate one shift at the Smyrna plant that produces the Rogue SUV. The same will occur in Canton starting in September, where the Altima saloon is produced.
Voluntary redundancies will accompany the decisions. The brand intends to encourage employees to leave with large severance packages. However, it does not disclose the amounts involved. The Japanese newspaper "Nikkei" claims that up to 1,500 people could be affected by redundancies.
The decision is part of a larger plan announced in November 2024, in which Nissan mentioned the possibility of laying off up to 9,000 people in China and North America.
The manufacturer has high hopes for improving the situation with a potential merger with Honda, which would create the world's third-largest automotive conglomerate.
