New missile shield: Israel's strategic edge amid Iran threats
Israeli media report that a THAAD air defence system battery will be deployed in the country for the first time. What is this weapon?

The deployment of this system to Israel is believed to be part of measures to prepare for repelling another significant attack from Iran. In the latest incident, Israel was targeted with, among others, ballistic missiles. These missiles are especially dangerous because, once launched, they reach very high speeds (up to Mach 5). Few air defence systems can effectively contend with ballistic missiles.
Israel wants to have THAAD
Israel is often cited as an example of a nation with a highly developed and effective missile defence shield. While the Iron Dome is typically praised for its performance, according to Israeli perspectives, higher levels of air and missile defence could benefit from additional strengthening.
Local media suggest this enhancement will be achieved by transferring the American THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) air defence system. However, it's worth noting that US Department of Defense representatives have not confirmed this scenario, stating only that such deployment is being considered.
THAAD air defence system in Israel: The USA still hesitates
THAAD is a missile system designed to intercept short—and medium-range ballistic targets. Given Iran's current threat, such a reinforcement could indeed prove invaluable for Israel. However, the delay may not be due to reluctance from the US government but rather a shortage of these systems. The Americans have limited batteries and, crucially, a restricted number of interceptor missiles.
THAAD is capable of neutralising targets at a distance of up to 125 miles and at an altitude of up to 93 miles. The system neutralises threats using kinetic energy (hit-to-kill). The radar integrated into the battery, which is responsible for target detection, has a range of up to 621 miles.
