New heights for 'Wicked': Sequel set for November 2025 debut
"Wicked" has unexpectedly taken over the pop culture world; what's better, the musical's dominance continues, even a month after its premiere. We already know some details about the next part of the adaptation of the Broadway classic.
The premieres of "Wicked" and "Gladiator" may not have created a second Barbenheimer, but the cinematic debut of the musical certainly made an impact. It opened stage productions to people who were not previously inclined to enjoy them and potentially began a trend of bringing classic theatre productions to the big screen. Once again, and with grandeur: featuring a huge budget, big stars, and actors who, at last, can truly sing. Because that's what musicals are about.
"Wicked" is not just about Ariana Grande's outstanding role (seriously, I was shocked) or the brilliant Cynthia Erivo. It also features Jonathan Bailey, who had the entire audience (note, a mixed crowd) swooning in unison, Jeff Goldblum (is anyone surprised by Elphaba’s mum? Please...), and of course, the original Glinda and Elphaba straight from Broadway: Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth. Great songs, beautiful production, loads of pop culture references (did you catch the one to "Shrek"?), and for dessert: the conspiracy theory of Robbie Williams with his cameo as a flying monkey. Divine. And extremely queer, which is just a bonus.
The film was a huge hit, and the creators immediately announced the sequel. The next instalment of "Wicked" will be released in 2025.
"Wicked: For Good" with an official release date!
The first part begins with joyful news - the Wicked Witch of the West is dead! However, we don't see Elphaba's demise on screen; rather, we see her triumphant escape, great hope, and moving, heart-breaking duet with Glinda.
The ultimate showdown between the "friends" and the Wizard is yet to come, and Universal has already decided to lift the curtain slightly and reveal when exactly "Wicked: For Good" will be released. Unfortunately, fans will have to wait almost a year for the film. The second part of the musical will premiere on 21 November 2025.
