Navagio Beach closure extends into another summer amid safety fears
The renowned Shipwreck Cove continues to draw visitors to the Greek island of Zakynthos. A boat visit to this picturesque beach is considered a highlight of any trip to the island. However, in March of the previous year, the decision was made to shut down the attraction. Authorities announced that it would be off-limits to tourists for a second consecutive summer.

The beloved tourist spot of Navagio on Zakynthos, nestled in the Ionian Sea, will remain closed this year due to landslide risks, as determined by local authorities.
Shipwreck Cove remains off-limits for yet another summer
A team of experts conducting regular safety evaluations recommended keeping the beach closed for another summer. They highlighted a considerable landslide risk due to the erosion of the nearby cliffs. Additionally, the condition of the shipwreck, which has endured damage, is also problematic. The Panagiotis shipwreck, which became stranded on the beach in 1980, is a central feature of the cove.
To the relief of many visitors, last year's decision allowed tourist boats to enter the cove, albeit with a 20-minute time constraint. Boats were also restricted to a specific area for movement. The Official Journal outlined the safe distance boats must maintain from the cliffs to navigate safely around Shipwreck Cove.
Shipwreck Cove's history of closures
Access to the beach, often cited as the most stunning in the world, has been restricted before for both residents and tourists. Following a 5.4-magnitude earthquake in September 2022, the beach was closed after falling rocks from nearby cliffs posed a danger. In 2018, a landslide injured seven people at Navagio, resulting in the beach being closed to tourists until April 2019.
As reported by Greek Reporter, the site's safety conditions are to be evaluated twice a year.
