Mystery drone threat prompts air base to bolster defences

The attacks by mysterious drones at Langley Air Force Base in late 2023 caused significant concern among the authorities and representatives of the US military. The base, located in the American state of Virginia, is home to fifth-generation F-22 jets, which play an essential role in the security of the United States. For this reason, the Americans decided to turn to a new, unconventional solution to protect the aircraft. However, a considerable amount of time passed before they implemented it.

A series of mysterious incidents from December 2023, when drones of various sizes and configurations began to appear at Langley Air Force Base, caused considerable concern. The Americans even decided to deploy a NASA WB-57F aircraft near the facility, which is usually used for rocket testing, to better understand the problem's scale. The presence of drones near the strategic base was a significant threat, especially since Langley is one of the few that hosts fifth-generation F-22 Raptor jets.

Drones - an increasing threat

Despite the seriousness of the problem, the Americans have only now decided to take action. According to The War Zone, they are considering installing anti-drone nets. The portal reports that this shows the "US military's ongoing delay in responding to very tangible threats from unmanned aerial systems." The modern battlefield demonstrates that drones are becoming an extremely effective weapon and an ever-greater challenge for the military. They can be used not only to attack selected targets but also for observation, target identification, and even delivering various payloads.

The 633rd Contracting Squadron from Langley noted in a statement issued at the beginning of October that it is seeking a solution in the form of an anti-drone net, which would be deployed around the 42 hangars existing at Langley. Its task would be to "deter and ultimately prevent the intrusion of pilots and drones in the vicinity." Additionally, the net is expected to assist in developing other anti-drone shields.

The Americans want the shield to protect against drones like the DJI Matrice 300 RTK. It must be made of material resistant to UV radiation and moisture, withstand temperatures of about 200°C and strong gusts of wind, and be suitable for quick assembly and disassembly to allow unobstructed flights of F-22 Raptors.

F-22 Raptor - American super fighters

Introduced into service in 2005, the F-22 Raptor fighter is one of the most advanced combat aircraft in the world. It is characterised by high manoeuvrability, the ability to achieve high speeds, and the capability to operate at high altitudes. It is equipped with advanced radar systems and weaponry, allowing it to detect and eliminate targets in the air and on the ground quickly.

The United States Air Force is the sole operator of the F-22 jets. The aircraft were designed for US needs and not sold to other countries. This decision made by the US government aims to maintain a technological advantage over potential adversaries. The F-22 Raptor plays a key role in the US defence strategy. Its advanced technologies and operational capabilities make it indispensable in air defence missions, intercepting enemy aircraft, and supporting ground forces. "This fighter is not only a defence tool but also a deterrent," emphasises Gen. Mark Kelly, Commander of the US Air Force.
