Probably no one is even slightly interested in cinema who hasn't heard of Ridley Scott's "Blade Runner" from 1982. This movie with Harrison Ford, based on the novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" by Philip K. Dick, didn't initially become a hit but quickly gained the status of a cult work and today is rightfully considered one of the masterpieces of science fiction cinema.
Moreover, it's hard to find a more visually stunning vision of a dystopian future city than the one in Blade Runner. Incidentally, this film has seen several versions. Scott himself believes that the only correct version is the director's cut.
In 2017, the sequel Blade Runner 2049 premiered 30 years after the original events. It was directed by Denis Villeneuve and starred Ryan Gosling and Sylvia Hoeks. Despite a few opponents of the sequel, it's fair to say that its advocates are right. This majestic film is one of the few Hollywood genre films of this century that amazes the image's power and hypnotises the narrative's rhythm.
"Blade Runner 2099" with Michelle Yeoh
Unfortunately, "Blade Runner 2049" also did not do spectacularly in cinemas. However, this does not stop other producers from trying at this universe. Prime Video has ordered a miniseries, "Blade Runner 2099," which is planned to continue the second film in the series. For now, little is known about the plot.
What is certain is that the project's star is Michelle Yeoh, who is currently well-known to audiences worldwide. This is thanks to the Oscar she received for her role in the movie "Everything Everywhere All at Once." Another matter is that Yeoh is generally an actress who likes to appear in series. She could be seen, among others, in "The Witcher: Blood Origin", "The Brothers Sun", and "American Born Chinese".
The duties of showrunner and executive producer of "Blade Runner 2099" are performed by Silka Luisa ("Shining Girls"). The first two episodes will be directed by Jonathan van Tulleken ("Shōgun"), who will also be one of the executive producers.
Interestingly, the miniseries could have started sooner without a delay due to strikes by writers and actors. Initially, the material was to be created in Belfast, but it was decided that production should be moved to Prague. Over time, more information will emerge about "Blade Runner 2099." We are very curious about what Amazon will come up with.
