Macron's bold proposal: Western troops for Ukraine's security
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that his country is considering French President Emmanuel Macron's proposal regarding the potential deployment of Western troops to Ukraine. Macron suggested that such a possibility should not be dismissed in the future to ensure Ukraine's security.
Zelensky discussed this issue during a meeting with the German chancellor candidate, CDU leader Friedrich Merz. He stressed that Ukraine requires security guarantees, particularly when it is not a NATO member.
- Even if we get invited (to NATO), what happens then? Who guarantees our security? We can think about that and work on Emmanuel Macron’s proposal - wrote Zelensky on social media.
The Ukrainian president reminded that Macron proposed that a contingent of troops from one country or another be stationed on Ukrainian territory to guarantee security when it is not yet in NATO.
- But before that, we must have a clear understanding of when Ukraine will join the EU and when it will become part of NATO – emphasised Zelensky.
Macron's idea
At the end of February, French President Emmanuel Macron stated that defeating Russia is essential to ensuring security in Europe. He added that the deployment of Western ground forces to Ukraine cannot be ruled out in the future.
Macron proposed stationing a contingent of troops from various countries on Ukrainian territory to guarantee its security during the transitional period, i.e., before joining the Alliance.
