"I'm aware of the potential danger from the monkeys," said Apirak Wechkanchana from the local police in an interview with the media.
"They started to pose a threat to tourists and residents alike. The slingshots our officers are now carrying will help intimidate the monkeys if necessary," he added.
The police do not aim at the monkeys, and the slingshots are mainly used to scare them away.

The monkeys have learned to recognize guns with tranquilisers and can run away from them.
"We had to hide our faces and guns with tranquilisers so the monkeys wouldn't see them," said one of the policemen.
Battles of the monkeys have been recorded, and the video has made it to social media.
