Lindsey Vonn, the highly decorated American alpine skier, is returning to competition after a lengthy break. During training ahead of the World Cup in the Italian town of Cortina d'Ampezzo, she experienced a minor fall. Her team confirmed this information; fortunately, it was only a minor scare.

The 40-year-old Vonn was training with other competitors prior to the downhill event. She fell, sustaining a bruise on her thigh, but avoided any serious injuries. This means she'll be able to compete in Italy over the weekend. Cortina d'Ampezzo, alongside Milan, will host the Winter Olympics next year.

During Thursday's training, Italian skier Federica Brignone recorded the best time, surpassing her compatriots Sofia Goggia and Nadia Delago.

A historic success for the Polish athlete. "It's a very big event"

Vonn, who in her career has won Olympic gold medals (downhill in Vancouver 2010) and world championships (super-G and downhill in Val d'Isère 2009), has 12 World Cup victories to her name in Cortina d'Ampezzo. The fall on Thursday occurred just before the finish line.

The American returned to competition after nearly a six-year break. In April 2023, she underwent surgery to have a prosthesis implanted in her left knee. Now she is back in excellent form and competing in the elite once again. Who knows, she might manage to win an Olympic medal in Cortina, where the Winter Games will be held next year.

For now, the American can boast of four Crystal Globes for triumphing in the general World Cup classification, eight small Crystal Globes in downhill, five in super-G, three in super combined, and 82 World Cup race victories. This is the second-highest number of wins in history, with the most victories held by Mikaela Shiffrin (USA).
