Moisture, food scraps, and lack of proper ventilation favour the growth of bacteria, which are the leading cause of sink odours.

Many of us resort to strong chemicals to combat this problem, which, although effective, can be harmful to the environment and the health of household members. Is there an alternative that is both effective and safe? It turns out that there is!

Throw a laundry pod into the sink

Although many chemical pipe cleaners are available on the market, they are not always the best choice. Their intense smell, corrosive properties, and potential environmental hazards make more and more people look for alternative methods.

An interesting and little-known way to get rid of foul odour from the sink is to use a laundry pod. The pod detergents have degreasing and disinfecting properties that do an excellent job of removing dirt and bacteria lodged in pipes. How do you do it?

  • Place a pod on the drain strainer — just one laundry pod is enough to clean the drain effectively.
  • Pour boiling water — hot water will dissolve the pod, and the resulting detergent solution will effectively remove germs and food scraps inside the pipes.
  • Repeat the process — if necessary, the procedure can be repeated for even better effect.

It is worth remembering, however, that this method is ineffective in the case of a clogged drain. If the problem involves accumulated debris blocking water flow, more invasive methods, such as specialised unclogging agents, may be necessary.

Maintenance is key

To avoid the problem of bad odours in the future, proper maintenance is worth remembering. The foundation is:

  • Regular drain cleaning: clean the drain of food residues and grease at least once a month. You can use a mixture of baking soda and vinegar, which also effectively eliminates bacteria.
  • Avoid pouring grease into the sink: hot oil and grease quickly harden in the cool pipes, promoting clogs and unpleasant odours.
  • Protect the drain from food scraps: use a drain strainer that will catch larger food scraps, preventing them from entering the pipes.
