At least three loud explosions were heard in Kyiv on Monday before noon. The air raid alarm was announced a few seconds later. Authorities reported that air defence had shot down two missiles. At least five people were injured.

The attack began before 10 AM Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) (before 9 AM in Poland). People could be seen in the streets fleeing to shelters. According to authorities, Russian forces attacked the Ukrainian capital with ballistic missiles.

"Around 9:30 AM Greenwich Mean Time, the enemy struck Kyiv with two ballistic missiles launched from temporarily occupied Crimea. The targets were destroyed. The type of missiles launched is being determined" - reported on Telegram by the Ukrainian Air Forces commander General Mykola Oleschuk.

Mayor of Kyiv, Vitaliy Klitschko, reported that fragments of shot-down missiles injured four people in the Pechersk district in the city centre.

"Five people were injured in the Pechersk District. Two women were treated on the spot. Two people, including a 16-year-old girl, were hospitalised" - he wrote.

Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba posted a video on social media showing children from one of the capital's schools running to a shelter. Moments earlier, sirens wailed in the city in response to the appearance of Russian missiles

"There are no atrocities Russian villains would not commit. Today they struck with ballistic missiles at the heart of a multimillion city" - he wrote.

He appealed for the provision of more missile defense systems to Ukraine.
