Kremlin awaits dialogue, Trump threatens with sanctions
The Kremlin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov spoke on Thursday about the "readiness for dialogue with the United States." He remarked, "We are waiting for signals from Washington, but so far none have arrived."
The Kremlin officially responded for the first time to President Donald Trump's announcements regarding talks with Vladimir Putin. On Thursday, Dmitry Peskov expressed Russia's readiness for dialogue with the United States, stating: "We are waiting for signals from Washington, but so far none have arrived."
Peskov noted that Russia is closely observing the new American administration. "We are precisely registering all the nuances. We remain ready for dialogue; President Putin has repeatedly stated this - for equal dialogue, for dialogue based on mutual respect," he conveyed, as quoted by the Reuters agency.
Dmitry Peskov also warned that any sanctions and unfriendly actions from the USA would have consequences. He mentioned the role of the United States in the victory over fascism, admitting that they helped the Soviet Union but remarked, "it's always been about business and making money" for them.
Trump on "a big favour"
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Donald Trump threatened to impose high taxes, tariffs, and sanctions on Russian goods if a peace agreement is not reached.
"I intend to do Russia, whose economy is failing, and President Putin a great favour. Let's come to an agreement now and stop this absurd war! It will only get worse. If we do not make a 'deal,' and soon, I will have no choice but to impose high taxes, tariffs, and sanctions on everything Russia sells to the United States and various other participating countries," he wrote on the social platform Truth Social. "We can do it the easy or hard way - easy is always better. It's time to 'make a deal!'" he added.
Trump also noted in the post that he loves Russians and has always had a good relationship with Putin, despite the "fraud" of the left - as he referred to the scandal regarding his team's contacts with Russians. He also mentioned that Russia "helped us win World War II, losing nearly 27 million people."
The new U.S. president stated on Tuesday that imposing new sanctions on Russia is "probable" if Vladimir Putin refuses negotiations. Earlier, he mentioned, among other things, that Putin is "destroying the country" by refusing talks, estimating Russian losses at 800,000 to a million soldiers.
