Potatoes, whether boiled, baked, or mashed, are integral to many meals served in our homes. However, to maintain their flavour and nutritional value, they must be stored under the right conditions. By doing so, we can avoid food waste and protect ourselves from potential food poisoning.
How to store boiled potatoes?
The key is to cool the potatoes quickly after cooking. They shouldn't be left to cool completely on the kitchen counter. It's best to transfer them to the refrigerator while they're still warm but not hot. Also, storing them in airtight containers prevents other food odours from permeating the potatoes.
Boiled potatoes can be stored in the fridge for up to four days. Baked potatoes remain fresh for three days, although they tend to lose their crispiness. Mashed potatoes will last in the fridge for about three to four days, provided they are stored in an airtight container. Add a bit of butter or milk to revitalise mashed potatoes before serving.
Raw peeled potatoes should not be stored for more than 24 hours. To prevent spoiling and browning, submerge them in cold water, ideally with a few drops of vinegar. If completely submerged in water, peeled potatoes can be refrigerated for up to four days.
What to do with leftover potatoes?
If you have leftover boiled potatoes, they don't have to go to waste. There are many delicious dishes you can prepare with them. You can fry the potatoes, mash them, add them to casseroles, or make potato pancakes. Always ensure the stored potatoes are still fresh.
Remember to discard potatoes that show signs of spoilage, such as an unpleasant smell, greasy texture, softness, spots, or mould.
How to refresh boiled potatoes?
One of the simplest ways to refresh potatoes is to reheat them in a pan. For crispy, golden potatoes, heat a small amount of oil or butter in a pan and toss in the potatoes. Avoid using too much fat, as this can make them greasy and hard to digest.
An alternative method is to use the oven. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius (350 degrees Fahrenheit) and place the potatoes on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Reheat them for about 10-15 minutes until they are warm and crispy. This method helps the potatoes retain their natural taste and perfect texture.
