The Ministry of Transport has urged drivers to exercise greater caution and adhere to traffic regulations. It also emphasised that an investigation has been launched to determine the causes of the disaster.
Road accidents are common in this West African country due to poor infrastructure and reckless driving. According to ministry data, such incidents cause the deaths of over 1,000 people annually.
At the beginning of this year, in the northern part of the country, a collision between a tanker and a bus resulted in the deaths of 13 people and injuries to 44.
Last year, the authorities introduced a driver's licence system based on penalty points, granting each driver 12 points that can be gradually deducted for violations. The monitoring system was also improved to punish dangerous drivers more effectively.
Tragic discovery off the coast of Senegal. At least 30 bodies found in an advanced state of decomposition
Another tragedy in Africa occurred a few weeks ago. At least 30 decomposing bodies were found on a boat off the coast of Senegal, Reuters reported at the time, citing the Senegalese military.
The boat, on which the bodies of migrants were found, was located about 70 kilometres from Dakar, the coastal capital of Senegal.
Last month, the Senegalese army conducted a 12-day operation, resulting in the arrest of 453 migrants and members of smuggling networks. More than half of those detained were Senegalese citizens.
