- As part of the truce in the Gaza Strip, Israel released 90 Palestinians from prison, including 69 women and girls and eight minor boys. This release is part of the first phase of the ceasefire that began late Sunday morning. The "Times of Israel" reports that as part of the truce, nearly 2,000 Palestinians are expected to be released. Earlier, Hamas released three hostages who had been held since 7th October 2023. Romi Gonen, Emily Damari, and Doron Steinbrecher were transported to Israel, where they reunited with their families. Hospital staff reported that their condition is stable. The war between Israel and Hamas began after the organisation attacked Israel on 7th October 2023. As a result of the hostilities, over 1,200 people have been killed, and 251 were abducted to the Gaza Strip. Israel responded with a military operation that resulted in the deaths of over 46,000 civilians in the Gaza Strip, according to Palestinian authorities. The humanitarian crisis in the region continues.
- During a pre-inaugural rally in Washington, Donald Trump announced the end of the invasion of the USA's borders. The President-elect promised that all illegal immigrants would be deported. Trump emphasised that his actions aim to restore order and security in the country. He stated, "By the time the sun sets tomorrow evening, the invasion of our borders will have come to a halt and all the illegal border trespasses will in some form or another be on their way back home," during his speech at the Capital One Arena.
- In reaction to Donald Trump's remarks, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum affirmed her administration's commitment to protecting Mexicans residing in the United States. Her statement came just a day before the new U.S. president, known for announcing plans to deport large numbers of migrants, assumed office. Sheinbaum highlighted that Mexico's consulates in the U.S. had been bolstered with additional legal support to assist Mexican citizens. She outlined her government's priority of safeguarding the well-being of Mexicans in the U.S. as the new administration began. With over 30 million Mexicans living in the United States, their contributions to economic development are significant. In 2024 alone, they sent $65 billion to Mexico—20 percent of their income—while the remaining 80 percent stayed within the U.S. economy.
- The Portuguese military is monitoring a Russian ship suspected of a spy mission near underwater telecommunications cables. The Portuguese Armed Forces took action due to the appearance of a Russian vessel in waters under their jurisdiction. A reconnaissance aircraft was sent to observe the vessel, which military specialists in Lisbon have identified as a spy ship.
