Iran sentences man to death over social media posts amid protests
In Iran in 2022, mass protests erupted in response to the tragic death of Mahsa Amini. The court has now sentenced Mahmoud Mehrabi to death. The man published social media content that supported the demonstrations and expressed opposition to the regime's actions.
On Tuesday, the Iranian judiciary announced that Mahmoud Mehrabi was sentenced to death. The man will die for publishing content on social media that supported the protests after the tragic death of Mahsa Amini in September 2022.
Mehrabi was convicted for publishing "content spreading knowledge about the use of homemade weapons; calling for the destruction of public property; inciting people to kill" during the demonstrations, reported Mizan Online.
The verdict can still be appealed
Mizan Online also reported that Mehrabi received "52 lawsuits from individuals for spreading lies". It's important to note that the trial took place with his lawyers present.
The court's verdict can be appealed to a higher instance. This allows for a possible appeal against such a severe penalty.
One of the man's lawyers, Babak Farsani, through a message on the X platform (formerly Twitter), confirmed that his client had been sentenced to death by the revolutionary court for "spreading scandal".
the death of a woman sparked mass protests
In Iran, mass protests erupted after the tragic death of Mahsa Amini. The woman died as a result of a brutal arrest by the police for wearing improper attire. Her death caused a wave of protests in the streets of cities, where thousands of people demanded justice and changes in the system. As a result of repression by the Iranian authorities, thousands of people were arrested, and many of them were subjected to brutal treatment.
Recently, the Iranian court issued a drastic sentence, sentencing rapper Toomaj Salehi to death for supporting the protest movement. Salehi spent more than a year and a half in prison before his death.
Amnesty International data casts an even more alarming perspective on the scale of repression in Iran. According to them, in 2023 alone, as many as 853 people were executed.
