Mexico rejects plan to house deported migrants at Guantanamo
Mexico will not allow the US to send Mexican migrants to Guantanamo and prefers to receive them directly, announced Mexico's Foreign Minister Juan Ramon de la Fuente.
- Mexico prefers to receive the migrants directly instead, as formally communicated in a diplomatic note to the US embassy in Mexico, indicated de la Fuente.
The White House spokeswoman, Karoline Leavitt, has informed that the first deportation flights to Guantanamo Bay have already commenced. Details regarding the number of migrants transported have not been disclosed. This operation is part of a broader plan to expand the detention centre, which is expected to accommodate up to 30,000 people.
Negotiations with the USA
Mexico's Economy Minister, Marcelo Ebrard, noted that the current situation provides an opportunity to negotiate with the USA from a partnership perspective. Both sides have agreed to suspend tariffs on Mexican imports for a month, allowing time to reach an agreement.
The President of the USA, Donald Trump, earlier announced the imposition of 25-percent tariffs on goods from Mexico, justifying it with concerns over the illegal influx of migrants and the fentanyl problem.
Negotiations are to commence with the participation of the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, and the heads of the finance and trade departments as part of the agreement.
