ICC prosecutor faces US sanctions over Netanyahu arrest warrant
International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor Karim Khan, who issued an arrest warrant for the Prime Minister of Israel, will become the first person subject to American sanctions against the Court, reports Reuters.
The Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, Karim Khan, at whose request an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been issued, will be the first person to be subject to American sanctions against the Court. This information was reported by Reuters, citing a source within the ICC.
Khan, a British citizen, was named in an unpublished annex to an order signed by US President Donald Trump. This order provides for financial and visa sanctions against the ICC and individuals supporting its actions against Americans and US allies, including Israel.
In November 2024, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Galant. Prosecutor Khan accused them of war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip, including using starvation as a method of warfare and attacks on civilians.
Khan also filed for the arrest of three Hamas leaders: Yahya Sinwar, Mohammed Deif, and Ismail Haniyeh, accusing them of, among other things, extermination and torture. Since then, they have been killed in attacks attributed to Israel. ICC President Tomoko Akane warned that the sanctions could threaten the Court's operations.
Trump imposes sanctions on the ICC
US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he is imposing sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC) and those supporting its actions against Americans and US allies, including Israel. In response, the ICC issued a statement condemning Trump's order and assuring that it will not stop fulfilling its mission.
"The Court stands firmly by its personnel and pledges to continue providing justice and hope to millions of innocent victims of atrocities across the world," reads the ICC response.
