In conversation with RMF FM's Brussels correspondent, an EU diplomat labelled Hungary's approach to Ukraine's potential membership as "very unfair." Despite the ongoing conflict, Ukraine strives to comply with the EU's stipulations. However, Olivér Várhelyi, the Hungarian Commissioner for EU enlargement, seems intent on overlooking Ukraine's efforts.

In December of the previous year, EU leaders greenlit the initiation of accession talks with Ukraine and Moldova, marking a significant step forward. Jerzy Marek Nowakowski, a former Polish ambassador to Latvia and Armenia, commented, highlighting the historical precedence that once negotiations start, they invariably reach a successful conclusion.

Throughout the negotiation process with Ukraine, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban showed resistance, even attempting to obstruct the discussions. He abstained from the final vote by exiting the room, enabling the Council to reach a unanimous decision.
