Chrysanthemums are a type of plant belonging to the aster family. They come in many varieties, differing in colour, shape, and size of the flowers. They are hardy and tolerate low temperatures well, so at the end of October and the beginning of November, they become some of the most popular decorations. However, it can happen that yellow leaves start to appear on them, spoiling the whole visual effect. There are ways to prevent this and remedy it when you first notice the leaves.
Why do chrysanthemums have yellow leaves?
Chrysanthemums are known for their colourful flowers and green stems with leaves. However, all plants can suffer from problems, and even on this autumn decoration, small unsightly yellow leaves can appear.
The most common cause is improper watering. Chrysanthemums like moist soil but do not like to be waterlogged. If we water them too often or too heavily, we can cause root rot and yellowing leaves. It's important not to err in the opposite direction either, because if they are not watered often enough, they can start to suffer from water stress, which can also cause yellow leaves to appear.
Another issue causing a change in colour is a lack of nutrients. The soil they are in may be deficient in nitrogen and iron. The plant then activates a survival mode and begins to conserve resources. Consequently, the leaves become yellow and less visually appealing.
Chrysanthemum yellowing - what to do?
However, before you consider throwing it away, conduct a plant rescue operation. First, adjust the watering - the soil should be moist but not wet. Maintain a regular watering schedule without overdoing it.
Regularly fertilise chrysanthemums, providing them with essential nutrients. A multi-component fertiliser containing iron, nitrogen, and phosphorus will work best. You can easily find it in a gardening shop.
Also, ensure the right location, as although these are very hardy plants, they have their preferences. It should be a bright spot, but sheltered from direct sunlight.
