Although nutritionists recommend minimising frying, there are some dishes where it's indispensable. Potato pancakes freshly cooked from the pan are the best. However, frying them can cause hot oil to splatter, which can be hazardous. Oil not only makes cabinets or worktops messy but can also lead to burns. It's useful to know a simple trick to prevent this.

A simple recipe, but then..

Potato pancakes are a classic dish. They are very easy to prepare. Simply peel the potatoes and grate them. Next, you add an egg, spices, and sometimes flour and onion, depending on the recipe. The prepared mixture is then placed in the pan. Frying is undoubtedly the most challenging part of preparing pancakes.

Why does it splatter so much?

The issue is that the potato mixture contains a lot of water and starch, which causes the oil to splatter. However, this can be prevented by using regular table salt. Sprinkle at least 1/3 of a teaspoon on the hot oil to absorb the excess moisture, thereby reducing splattering. The oil for frying pancakes should be suitable for high temperatures. The best option is rapeseed oil, which has a mild flavour. Pancakes fried in it will be crispy with a delicate interior.

Important!

To make the pancakes crispy, it's crucial that the mixture is placed into very hot oil. Fry them for 3 to 5 minutes on each side, and once done, place them on a paper towel to absorb the excess oil.
