According to data from the EU climate service "Copernicus", this year's summer, from 1 June to 31 August, was record-breakingly hot both globally and in Europe.
Temperature is rising worldwide
As experts from the "Copernicus" centre calculate, the temperature was record-breaking over the last 12 months, from September 2023 to August 2024.
Data collected from thousands of meteorological stations worldwide shows that the average global temperature during this period was as much as 3 degrees Fahrenheit higher than that of the second half of the 19th century.
Record-breaking eight months
The first eight months of this year were also record-breakingly warm. This suggests that the current year will take the title of the hottest year in recorded history from the previous record holder - 2023.
In Europe alone, the hottest year in history was 2020.
