White socks tend to get dirty and fuzzy quickly, which means they often don't look their best after washing. Even special detergents with bleach don't always tackle visible dirt on white fabrics. Before deciding to buy new pairs, try a homemade rinse that addresses stubborn stains.
White materials easily "catch" dirt and also tend to be yellow or grey over time. We often turn to expensive detergents or bleaches to restore their snowy whiteness in such situations. However, bleaches can irritate the skin and cause health issues, so it's worth considering home remedies. One is using baking soda or vinegar, which are both effective and safe for our health. You probably already have both of these ingredients in your kitchen.
Baking soda and vinegar good for everything
To effectively clean white socks, it's worth preparing a solution that not only whitens the material but also disinfects it, which is particularly important if you have problems with excessive foot sweating. Add two tablespoons of baking soda to at least one litre of warm water—for more substantial stains, you can double this amount. The socks should soak in this mixture for at least half an hour, after which you can wash them normally in the washing machine. Once dry, they will look like new.
If you don't have baking soda, you can use vinegar. Add a cup of vinegar to one litre of warm water, and then soak the socks in this solution, also for half an hour. After this time, they should be washed normally in the washing machine, which will, among other things, neutralise the vinegar smell.
Don't have baking soda or vinegar? Use eggshells
Baking soda and vinegar are eco-friendly solutions. If you don't have them on hand, eggshells can be an alternative for whitening fabrics. Although it may seem unlikely, thanks to the whitening properties of eggshells, the "wow" effect is guaranteed. Before use, clean the eggshells, place them in a laundry bag, and throw them in the drum with the socks. After washing and drying, they will be snowy white again.
