Coffee or tea grounds and leftover food from dishes can accumulate in the drain. At first glance, it might not seem like there's anything there. However, after removing the "basket" and the metal part, you'll find the situation quite different. Over time, the lingering food remnants will emit an unpleasant odour and become a significant breeding ground for bacteria.

We must remember that if we don't clean the sink and drain, we will eventually cause a blockage in the pipes. In extreme cases, this may require the assistance of a professional.

Home remedies for cleaning the drain

Before resorting to chemical agents that have a highly corrosive composition and can be hazardous to our health, try home remedies. They may be much more effective and offer a far cheaper alternative than store-bought products.

One of the most effective methods for unclogging the drain is a mixture made from baking soda and vinegar. Simply pour about 100 grams of baking soda and 120 millilitres of vinegar into the sink, then place a cloth to plug the drain. The generated foam will start to remove the dirt. After approximately 30 minutes, remove the cloth and, for better results, pour boiling water over everything.

The second tip helps us maintain better cleanliness. Few remember to clean the drain beneath the "basket".

How to do it? Pour 4 teaspoons of baking soda, about 120 millilitres of vinegar, squeeze just under half a lemon, and mix. Remove the "basket" and unscrew the lower part of the drain, then, using a toothbrush, scrub the entrance to the pipes with the prepared mixture.
